HOW DO I BECOME A CONTESTANT?
Tropical Island Beauty Pageants are open to all young women between the ages of 5 thru 13 who meet the eligibility requirements.
DO I NEED TO HAVE PAGEANT EXPERIENCE TO COMPETE?
Quite often, our competitors are the “girls next door” with little or no pageant experience.
On an almost annual basis, we have had girls winning who have never competed in pageants before.
The Tropical Island Beauty Pageants are open to all young women who meet the eligibility requirements. You do not need to win a preliminary title or have previous pageant experience to participate.
WHEN IS THE NEXT PAGEANT?
The 2021 Tropical Island Beauty Pageant will be held April 2021 at the Grand Naniloa Hotel A Double Tree by Hilton. Event and details may change to adhere to the current CDC guidelines and mandates imposed by federal, state, and local government.
HOW IS THE PAGEANT JUDGED?
Each contestant in the Tropical Island Beauty Pageant will be judged in 3 areas of competition:
Interview, Fun Fashion, and Evening Gown.
Judging criteria includes character, poise, confidence, and personality. For more detailed information, please read more about our judging criteria below.
Interview questions in ALL divisions are age appropriate.
I DONT FEEL CONFIDENT WITH THE INTERVIEW PHASE OF COMPETITION?
One should never be afraid of interview. The judges are getting to know you as an individual. They want to know who you are, your hobbies, your goals, and what your likes are. Judges are instructed to ask age appropriate questions and there is no wrong answer. Interview helps to prepare each girl for future interviews for school, jobs, and college. We encourage you to answer from your heart.
IS THERE A TALENT PORTION OF THE COMPETITION?
No, there is no performing talent competition in ALL divisions.
There are 3 equally scored categories, including Interview, Swimsuit(Miss)/Fitness Wear(Teen)/Fun Fashion(Tropical Island Beauty), and Evening Gown.
ARE THERE ANY HEIGHT OR WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS TO COMPETE IN THE PAGEANT?
Absolutely not! We’re looking for outgoing, intelligent, dedicated, driven, and committed, young ladies who are excited to proudly represent the Big Island of Hawaii.
AM I TOO OLD OR YOUNG TO ENTER THE PAGEANT?
Never at any time are the judges directed to consider age when choosing a winner. Age is only a factor in determining the division in which you will compete.
HOW MANY CONTESTANTS COMPETE IN THE PAGEANTS?
The number of contestants vary each year. However typically there are between 3 to 10 contestant in each division.
HOW DOES SPONSORSHIP WORK?
Collecting sponsorship is very important. It takes time and commitment on your part. You start with a list of potential sponsors such as friends and family members, and their employers, businesses, etc. Plan your strategy and make a plan to succeed! Schedule an appointment to collect your sponsorships. When approaching potential sponsors or preparing a sponsorship letter, explain your goals, your desire to improve yourself by participating in the Tropical Island Beauty Pageant, the charities you believe in, opportunities, and how it will help your self growth. Let them know what your experience will entail. This will be extremely beneficial in developing your communication skills. This is an essential characteristic to have if you’re going to be the next Mini Miss / Little Miss / Miss Jr. Teen Tropical Island Beauty.
Our goal is for contestants to collect 100% of the sponsorship fee. This is a tax-deductible advertising expense for businesses that assist you with sponsorship. If you work hard on collecting sponsorship, it is possible that you will not incur any expenses out of pocket. In addition, hardworking contestants receive material item sponsorships, such as a gown, dresses, accessories, a haircut, etc.
WHAT IF I RAISE MORE MONEY THAN THE REQUIRED SPONSORSHIP FEE?
If you raise more money than what's required for your entry fee, you may use the extra funds to cover any additional expenses associated with the pageant. Your overage may be used to purchase spotlight ads in the program book, or may go to purchasing your wardrobe, or may just give you a little extra spending money.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF A SPONSOR GIVES ME CASH FOR MY SPONSORSHIP FEE?
If you receive cash contributions for your sponsorship fee, you may put that money into a money order or send a personal check. Please DO NOT send cash through the mail at any time.
WHAT IF I SIMPLY CANNOT AFFORD TO COMPETE?
We will explain how to obtain sponsorships and offer many fund-raising ideas to cover competition costs—including entry fee and wardrobe. Your family, friends and local business leaders will be supportive when you share your goals with them.
DO I NEED A PAGEANT COACH TO HELP ME PREPARE?
Even though some contestants wish to seek expert advice, we do not see this reflected in the overall outcome of the pageant. Focus on being your “personal best!”. We also have workshops prior to the pageant where we work on walking, mock interviews, and more to help you prepare for the pageant.
DO I NEED TO SHOP WITH THE PAGEANT SPONSORS WHEN PREPARING FOR COMPETITION?
No. However, we do our best to seek out the best of the best when it comes to our sponsors. We provide our sponsor information to you only as a resource. We NEVER allow our sponsors to discuss with us who their clients are.
DO I HAVE TO SPEND A FORTUNE ON OUTFITS?
Not at all! We currently have a formal wear sponsor who offers a 20% discount to our confirmed contestants of Tropical Island Beauty. You do not need to spend a fortune with Fun Fashion, interview outfit, or an evening gown. It is most important to find outfits that you will feel confident in and that best suit you, your personality , and your budget. The personal choice of gowns have spanned from simple, to elegant, to hand beaded. However, it is never the gown that the judges are scoring; it’s the young woman wearing it. Again, several contestants have been able to secure a gown sponsor to assist them.
DO I NEED TO HAVE A DIFFERENT GOWN FOR REHEARSALS AND FOR FINALS?
No. We highly recommend wearing the same gown for rehearsals and pageant competitions. Nearly all contestants wear the same gown.
WHAT TYPE OF PHOTO SHOULD I USE FOR MY OFFICIAL PAGEANT PHOTO IN THE PROGRAM BOOK?
Official pageant photos will be taken by the Official Tropical Island Beauty Photographer. This is not an additional cost to you. Attire preference will be given by Directors.
WHAT IF I CAN'T GET MY REGISTRATION MATERIAL IN BEFORE THE DEADLINES?
Deadlines are very important to us in order to make timely program preparations. However, we realize that unexpected circumstances can arise and that the collection of sponsorship may take longer than expected. Therefore, the extension of due dates is available when needed. If you need an extension, please call or email the pageant Director(s).
WHAT IS REQUIRED IF I SHOULD BECOME THE NEXT MINI MISS TROPICAL ISLAND BEAUTY, LITTLE MISS TROPICAL ISLAND BEAUTY, OR MISS JR.TEEN TROPICAL ISLAND BEAUTY?
The Tropical Island Beauty Titleholders must represent their title and Tropical Island Beauty Pageant for a reign of one year. Each titleholder will also receive a contract that will state what her requirements are as a representative of Tropical Island Beauty.
DO ONLY WINNERS GET SELECTED FOR VARIOUS MODELING / TALENT OPPORTUNITIES AND CAREER BENEFITS?
No! On a regular basis, we receive requests from modeling agencies and casting companies looking for young ladies for particular opportunities. We often recommend previous contestants to fill the requests. Absolutely not! We make school the number one priority! Our program only encourages your success!
IF I WIN, WILL IT INTERFERE WITH SCHOOL?
With Tropical Island Beauty, education and family responsibilities are priority. We do our best to work with each titleholders schedule. Almost all of your appearances, events, photo shoots, and volunteer and community work will take place during the weekend or after school which will be scheduled in advance. However, at times we are invited or notified last minute which are not mandatory to attend.

Throughout the Tropical Island Beauty Pageant, delegates are judged in three equal areas:

Fun Fashion: Attention is focused on personality, overall appearance, outfit of choice, sense of style, and the confidence with which each contestant carries herself.
Gown: Each delegate wears a floor length gown she has chosen for herself. Attention is focused on each contestant’s overall appearance, self-confidence, sense of style, poise, and the beauty she brings to the gown of her choice.
The Tropical Island Beauty Pageants are looking for diverse and dedicated young ladies who are not only beautiful, but intelligent and willing to share their hearts and minds as ambassadors to our island, state and nation. Winning titles of this magnitude catapults young women to instantly become role models in their community. It is important that they understand that, along with the prizes and glamour, there comes a responsibility to the pageant system, sponsors, community, and to the Island of Hawaii. There is no end to the possibilities and opportunities that await, and their year as titleholders is certain to be a one full of personal growth and development. We believe that each titleholders title and crown is as fulfilling as she chooses to make it.
